The Commissions are groups of Catholics (priests, deacons, religious and laypeople) from across the Diocese who are appointed by the Bishop and commissioned by him to advise him in certain areas of the Diocesan Mission. They are also charged with the animation and co-ordination of this aspect of Mission throughout the Diocese. In some circumstances, the Commissions may be authorised to act in the name of the Bishop with some level of decision-making authority.

This Commission, acting on behalf of the Bishop manages and promotes policy and procedures relating to the safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults within the Diocese. The Commission advises the Bishop on safeguarding issues and on specific cases.
Commission for Christian Unity
This group co-ordinates the collaboration of the Diocese with other Christian communities in Lancashire and Cumbria. It also advises and at times represents the Bishop on ecumenical matters and keeps the awareness of the local Church on the desire of the Lord 'that they may all be one.'
Marriage & Family Life Commission
This Diocesan Commission animates Marriage and Family Life ministry in the parishes of Diocese and advises the Bishop on how parishes and indeed the entire Diocese can support this vital ministry.
This Commission animates all Faith & Justice work in the Diocese and advises the Bishop on questions of justice and social teaching in the Diocese. The Commission is active in organising events around the Diocese that promotes and celebrates the Faith & Justice aspect of the wider Diocesan mission.
Youth Service Management Group
This group is commissioned by the Bishop to promote and manage on behalf of the Trustees the Diocesan Youth Service – both outreach & residential aspects.
Lancaster Diocese is legally established in this country as a charitable corporation under the title Lancaster Roman Catholic Diocesan Trustees Registered. Being registered with the Charity Commissioners (No. 234331) the Diocese enjoys charitable trustee status. In general all properties and assets of the Diocese are vested in the Diocesan Trustees. Since 1985 the Trustees act in Canon Law as the Diocesan Finance Council.
